Issue #26 - Pink Hair, Mountain Air, & The Big Top-Off

A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse.

The Terrarium

Hey!

By the time you read this, I’ll likely be halfway to Asheville, NC. I’m ready for the mountain air, the art, and hopefully a very large cider.

But let’s talk about the elephant (or the boa) in the room: How do we leave? When you have multiple enclosures, "going on vacation" isn't as simple as tossing a spare key to a neighbor and asking them to "check on the cat." It’s a military-grade logistical operation. For me, leaving the zoo requires a two-pillar system: Trustworthy People and Fail-safe Automation.

The Person: You need someone who doesn’t just "like animals," but someone who understands that a heat lamp being off is an emergency. Having a fellow keeper or a highly trained friend is the only way I can sleep at night.

The Robots: Even the best pet sitter can’t be there 24/7. That’s where automation earns its keep.

🤖 The Product Spotlight: The "Sitter" That Never Sleeps

One of the biggest stressors when leaving is humidity. If a shed is coming on or you have high-moisture species, you can't just hope for the best for four days.

I rely on my Repti-Zoo Automatic Mister (10L).

Why I’m obsessed with this specific unit for travel:

The 10L Capacity: I don't have to worry about my sitter forgetting to refill a tiny reservoir. This thing is a tank.

High-Pressure Reliability: It actually mists; it doesn’t just "drip" sadly onto the floor.

The "Peace of Mind" Factor: Knowing the humidity cycles are handled automatically means my sitter can focus on the important stuff, like making sure Fettuccine hasn't decided to rearrange his furniture again.

🚿 The "Big Top-Off" Ritual

Before I head to the mountains, my "pre-flight" ritual isn't about perfectly color-coded binders; it’s about the Big Top-Off. I'm basically spending my Wednesday playing "Refill Everything" so my sitter has the easiest job on the planet.

The Reservoir Run: I’m topping off the 10L Repti-Zoo mister to the brim. If I fill it now, my sitter doesn't even have to look at a gallon of distilled water while I’m gone.

The Soak Strategy: I go through and give all the plants a deep soak (bathtub-style, obviously) and ensure the water bowls are scrubbed and overflowing.

Substrate Check: I’m looking for any "dry spots" and giving the enclosures a manual heavy misting right before I walk out the door. It buys the automatic systems a head start.

My goal is to make the zoo so self-sufficient that my sitter’s main job is just to text me: "Fettuccine is still a noodle, everything is fine."

If you’ve been holding off on a trip because you’re scared the "zoo" will fall apart without you, this is your sign to invest in better systems. Whether it’s a smart plug for your lights or a high-capacity mister, your freedom is worth the upgrade.

I’m off to go find some mountain views (and maybe some new trinkets I definitely don't have room for). See you next week!
From my zoo to yours, stay hydrated, feed your bugs, and check your basking temps.

Better late than never? (Plus: Feets the Tarantula!) 🕷️

On Wednesdays We Wear Scales  A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse. Hey! I have a confession: I completely forgot it was Wednesday yesterday. Between staring at my new ring, trying to remember what day of the week it is post-vacation, and catching up on all the "Zoo Business" I missed while in Asheville, my internal calendar is officially broken. I’m blaming Engagement Brain. But honestly? Sometimes the best schedule is the one that allows for a little chaos. If you’ve ever forgotten to mist your enclosures until 11 PM or realized you’re out of feeder insects on a Sunday night, just know, I am right there with you in the trenches of forgetfulness. Featured Creature: Feets the Curly Hair Speaking of things that are patient with my busy schedule, let’s talk about Feets, my Curly Hair Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosus). If you want an animal that won’t hold a grudge when you’re a day late on an update, get a tarantula. Feets is the ultimate low-maint...

The tarantula that started it all... 🕷️💙
