Vacationing with a Zoo: Logistics, Trust, and Robots 🏔️✈️

When you have multiple enclosures, "going on vacation" isn't as simple as tossing a spare key to a neighbor and asking them to "check on the cat." It’s a military-grade logistical operation. For me, leaving the zoo requires a two-pillar system: Trustworthy People and Fail-safe Automation. The Person: You need someone who doesn’t just "like animals," but someone who understands that a heat lamp being off is an emergency. 2:30 AM in the Zoo: The Birth Observation 🍼

  On Wednesdays We Wear Scales  A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse. Hey! This week, my "quiet" routine was interrupted by a 2:30 AM discovery. I have a nocturnal routine. It's the standard middle-of-the-night check that every keeper (and parent!) does. I stop by the reptile room to see who is awake and what they’re up to. And let me tell you, what I saw this week... well, it required a very careful stance. The Madagascar Miracle (That Almost Happened) I stopped in front of one of my Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. And she wasn't just existing; she was doing the work. She was airing out her ootheca (her egg case). If you haven't seen this before, it is fascinating and just a little bit unsettling. They extrude the entire thing, then pulsate it, moving air and moisture around before they retract it back inside to hatch.
