Issue #24 - The Routine Check-In

A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse.

The Terrarium

Hey!

This week, my "quiet" routine was interrupted by a 2:30 AM discovery.

I have a nocturnal routine. It's the standard middle-of-the-night check that every keeper (and parent!) does. I stop by the reptile room to see who is awake and what they’re up to.

And let me tell you, what I saw this week... well, it required a very careful stance.

Featured Creature

✨ The Madagascar Miracle (That Almost Happened)

I stopped in front of one of my Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. And she wasn't just existing; she was doing the work.

She was airing out her ootheca (her egg case). If you haven't seen this before, it is fascinating and just a little bit unsettling. They extrude the entire thing, then pulsate it, moving air and moisture around before they retract it back inside to hatch.

The "Observations" (All 45 Minutes of Them)

I watched her for three-quarters of an hour. I was convinced I was about to witness a live birth (or, well, a live hatching). The adrenaline was flowing, the focus was intense, classic CVT emergency energy, but in my reptile room.

...And then she finished, retracted the case, and went about her night. No live babies, no big moment. Just the slow, steady rhythm of the species.

The Lesson

It was a powerful reminder that sometimes the most important part of husbandry isn't the big setups. It's the Patience of Observation.

I spent 45 minutes of my life watching a cockroach pulsate an egg case. And you know what? It was some of the best content (and "care") I’ve created.

✨ Keeper Note: Real connection with your animals doesn’t always happen when they are "interactive" or "cuddly." Connection is witnessing the quiet, vital biological processes that keep them alive. It’s sitting in the dark and appreciating the "grit" of life.

Me, crouching, holding my breath, and filming. (Yes, I took a picture of my phone filming, because this moment needed that extra level of documentation!)

The Tool that Buys Me Time:

🛠️ Automated Mister by ReptiZoo

People often ask me why I lean so hard into automation: timers, bioactive setups, and especially my ReptiZoo Automatic Mister.

It’s not because I’m "lazy." It’s because automation buys me the time to observe.

If I had to spend two hours every night manually misting every enclosure, I never would have been able to stop for 45 minutes just to watch my cockroach. Automation handles the "chore" so I can handle the "connection."

If you’re waiting for "the big moment" in your hobby right now, this is your permission to just crouch down and appreciate the small, steady rhythms in front of you. Sometimes the pulse is enough.
From my zoo to yours, stay hydrated, feed your bugs, and check your basking temps.

Better late than never? (Plus: Feets the Tarantula!) 🕷️

On Wednesdays We Wear Scales  A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse. Hey! I have a confession: I completely forgot it was Wednesday yesterday. Between staring at my new ring, trying to remember what day of the week it is post-vacation, and catching up on all the "Zoo Business" I missed while in Asheville, my internal calendar is officially broken. I’m blaming Engagement Brain. But honestly? Sometimes the best schedule is the one that allows for a little chaos. If you’ve ever forgotten to mist your enclosures until 11 PM or realized you’re out of feeder insects on a Sunday night, just know, I am right there with you in the trenches of forgetfulness. Featured Creature: Feets the Curly Hair Speaking of things that are patient with my busy schedule, let’s talk about Feets, my Curly Hair Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosus). If you want an animal that won’t hold a grudge when you’re a day late on an update, get a tarantula. Feets is the ultimate low-maint...

The tarantula that started it all... 🕷️💙
