Issue #1 - Settling Into the Terrarium

A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse.

The Terrarium

Hey!

If your week’s been a blur of misting bottles, mealworms, and mild existential dread, same. ☕🪲

You’ve officially made it to On Wednesdays We Wear Scales, the part of the week where we take a midweek breath, talk reptiles and real life, and remember that thriving looks different for everyone (and every terrarium).

Featured Creature

Featured Creature: Fettuccine the Boa

Because who else would get the first spotlight? 🐍

Fast facts:

  • Species: Boa constrictor imperator
  • Mood: Cozy noodle

This week’s spotlight belongs to my right-hand reptile (and part-time coworker), Fettuccine. He’s been with me for about two years now, and I swear he’s one of the most polite snakes I’ve ever met. Never head shy, never snappy, just an inquisitive "little" noodle who prefers to people-watch and supervise my enclosure cleaning like it’s a performance review.

He came with me to VEG this week and immediately rediscovered his favorite pastime: climbing his coat rack like it’s an exotic dancer pole. It’s impressive, slightly concerning, and a perfect reminder that boas love vertical space. They’re semi-arboreal, even as adults, and offering climbing opportunities can make a big difference in both their enrichment and muscle tone.

✨ Keeper Tip: A boa that climbs is a boa that thrives, give them something sturdy to explore, and they’ll show you how graceful (and dramatic) a heavy-bodied snake can be.

Keeper Tip of the Week:

Happy Bugs = Healthy Reptiles

If your feeder bugs are thriving, your reptiles will too. A lot of people forget that feeders need good nutrition before they’re fed, it’s what makes them actually worth eating.

So give your bugs the same care you’d give your pets: fresh produce, hydration gels, and a little space to live their best lives. Think of it as meal prep for your reptiles.

If you grabbed my Beginner Bug Guide, how are you liking it so far?

If you haven’t checked it out yet, you can grab your free copy here. It covers all the basics to keep your colonies alive, healthy, and less stinky.

Thanks for spending part of your Wednesday here with me.
From my zoo to yours, stay hydrated, feed your bugs, and check your basking temps.

Better late than never? (Plus: Feets the Tarantula!) 🕷️

On Wednesdays We Wear Scales  A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse. Hey! I have a confession: I completely forgot it was Wednesday yesterday. Between staring at my new ring, trying to remember what day of the week it is post-vacation, and catching up on all the "Zoo Business" I missed while in Asheville, my internal calendar is officially broken. I’m blaming Engagement Brain. But honestly? Sometimes the best schedule is the one that allows for a little chaos. If you’ve ever forgotten to mist your enclosures until 11 PM or realized you’re out of feeder insects on a Sunday night, just know, I am right there with you in the trenches of forgetfulness. Featured Creature: Feets the Curly Hair Speaking of things that are patient with my busy schedule, let’s talk about Feets, my Curly Hair Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosus). If you want an animal that won’t hold a grudge when you’re a day late on an update, get a tarantula. Feets is the ultimate low-maint...

The tarantula that started it all... 🕷️💙
