The Terrarium

Hey!

I hope your week’s going smoothly and your basking bulbs are holding strong. This week’s edition is for the dragon lovers...the rare, the common, and the ones we can only dream about.

Featured Creature

Featured Creature: Hydrosaurus, the Sailfin Dragon

If I ever hit the reptile keeper lottery, my next enclosure build would be for a Hydrosaurus, the sailfin dragon. These lizards are basically monitors with better hair.

Fast facts:

  • Species: Hydrosaurus pustulatus (Philippine Sailfin Dragon)
  • Size: 3–4 feet including tail
  • Lifespan: 15–25 years in captivity
  • Habitat: Tropical riverbanks and lowland forests of the Philippines, Indonesia, and New Guinea
  • Diet: Omnivorous — fruits, leafy greens, insects, small fish, and the occasional pinkie
  • Behavior: Semi-aquatic and semi-arboreal; strong swimmers and excellent climbers
  • Special Feature: A tall, laterally compressed tail and dorsal sail used for balance, display, and thermoregulation

Native to the Philippines, Indonesia, and New Guinea, they’re large, semi-aquatic lizards that spend their days swimming, basking, and showing off their dramatic dorsal sails. That sail isn’t just for looks, it helps with balance while swimming and works like a solar panel to regulate their body temperature.

Hydrosaurs are also surprisingly social. In the wild, males will head-bob, flare their sails, and even change posture to communicate dominance or courtship. They’re intelligent, food-motivated, and absolutely full of character... but they need massive setups and high humidity to thrive.

✨ Keeper Note: The sailfin dragon might not be a beginner species, but it’s one of those reptiles that reminds you how much personality, grace, and drama can fit into a single lizard.

Keeper Tip of the Week:

So You Keep a Slightly Less Rare Dragon?

Let’s talk about everyone’s gateway dragon: the bearded dragon.

They might not have sails or swim like water lizards, but they’ve earned their crown as the world’s most popular pet reptile for a reason, they’re personable, hardy, and full of sass.

Healthy dragons start with the basics: strong UVB, proper calcium balance, and a good basking gradient. If you need a refresher or want to compare your setup to the pros, my Bearded Dragon Care Guide, breaks down everything from lighting to feeding schedules.

You can check it out here. It’s perfect for first-time keepers and seasoned dragon parents who want to fine-tune their setup.

✨ Bonus tip: No matter which dragon you keep, variety is key. Rotate feeders, offer greens daily, and make hydration easy with misting or the occasional soak.

Thanks for spending part of your Wednesday here with me.
From my zoo to yours, stay hydrated, feed your bugs, and check your basking temps.

Better late than never? (Plus: Feets the Tarantula!) 🕷️

On Wednesdays We Wear Scales  A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse. Hey! I have a confession: I completely forgot it was Wednesday yesterday. Between staring at my new ring, trying to remember what day of the week it is post-vacation, and catching up on all the "Zoo Business" I missed while in Asheville, my internal calendar is officially broken. I’m blaming Engagement Brain. But honestly? Sometimes the best schedule is the one that allows for a little chaos. If you’ve ever forgotten to mist your enclosures until 11 PM or realized you’re out of feeder insects on a Sunday night, just know, I am right there with you in the trenches of forgetfulness. Featured Creature: Feets the Curly Hair Speaking of things that are patient with my busy schedule, let’s talk about Feets, my Curly Hair Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosus). If you want an animal that won’t hold a grudge when you’re a day late on an update, get a tarantula. Feets is the ultimate low-maint...
