Issue #5 - Small but Mighty: Chompers’ Checkup

A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse.

The Terrarium

Hey!

Chompers had his vet visit this week, and I’m happy to report he’s in great health.. just staying compact! Our exotics-focused veterinarian confirmed what I suspected: his slower growth likely traces back to his early life, but everything about his body condition and bloodwork looks strong.

For his x-rays, we used a nitrile glove box as a makeshift containment setup (resourceful, right?). He wasn’t exactly thrilled about the arrangement (lots of dramatic tail flicks) but he powered through like a champ. He may be smaller than average, but his personality (and appetite) remain way larger than life.

Featured Creature: Chompers’ Clean Bill of Health

Chompers had his big vet day this week, and I couldn’t be prouder of how it went. We used a nitrile glove box as an impromptu containment setup for his x-rays (true vet tech innovation), and while he wasn’t exactly thrilled about the arrangement, he powered through like a champ. His scans came back spotless, great bone density, clear organs, and healthy body condition.

He’s still smaller than the average Savannah monitor, but the vet confirmed what I’ve long suspected: this is just his normal. There’s no underlying issue, no growth problem, just one very energetic, perfectly healthy little lizard who never got the memo about being “average.”

These moments are such a good reminder that reptiles, just like people, come in all shapes and sizes. What matters most isn’t how they compare to others, but how they’re thriving in your care. Chompers is thriving loud, curious, and hungry as ever.

✨ Keeper Note: Sometimes, the best kind of peace of mind comes in the form of a clean x-ray and a very offended lizard glare.

Chompers demonstrating true vet-tech innovation, contained safely for his x-rays in a repurposed nitrile glove box. Not his favorite setup, but effective, compact, and a perfect snapshot of reptile medicine ingenuity.

Keeper Tip of the Week:

Knowing Your Normal

It’s easy to tell when something’s really wrong with a reptile, but the subtle shifts? Those are the ones that matter most. Learning your animal’s baseline behavior, appetite, weight, and even basking habits can make all the difference in catching problems early.

Routine checkups, like Chompers’ recent visit, aren’t just about finding issues... they help define what “normal” looks like for your specific animal. Maybe your lizard runs a little cooler, eats every other day, or prefers a slightly odd basking angle. Those quirks are part of their individual pattern.

When you know your reptile’s normal, you’ll notice even the smallest change, before it becomes something bigger. That’s real preventive care.

✨ Keeper Note: The best time to meet your exotic vet is before there’s an emergency. Building a relationship early helps you understand your reptile’s normal, and gives your vet a baseline to compare against when things change.

Thanks for spending part of your Wednesday here with me.
From my zoo to yours, stay hydrated, feed your bugs, and check your basking temps.

Better late than never? (Plus: Feets the Tarantula!) πŸ•·️

On Wednesdays We Wear Scales  A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse. Hey! I have a confession: I completely forgot it was Wednesday yesterday. Between staring at my new ring, trying to remember what day of the week it is post-vacation, and catching up on all the "Zoo Business" I missed while in Asheville, my internal calendar is officially broken. I’m blaming Engagement Brain. But honestly? Sometimes the best schedule is the one that allows for a little chaos. If you’ve ever forgotten to mist your enclosures until 11 PM or realized you’re out of feeder insects on a Sunday night, just know, I am right there with you in the trenches of forgetfulness. Featured Creature: Feets the Curly Hair Speaking of things that are patient with my busy schedule, let’s talk about Feets, my Curly Hair Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosus). If you want an animal that won’t hold a grudge when you’re a day late on an update, get a tarantula. Feets is the ultimate low-maint...
