Issue #9 - My Dream Tarantula + A Holiday Keeper Reminder

A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse.

The Terrarium

Hey!

With the holidays officially here, this week felt like a good time to slow down a bit and talk about something that’s been on my keeper wish list for a long time.

This issue is all about a dream tarantula, one of those species you admire, research, and quietly hope might one day make it home with you. And since it’s Christmas week, I’m also sharing a gentle keeper reminder for this busy, chaotic time of year.

🕷️ Feature: A Dream Tarantula

Some tarantulas just stay on your “one day” list... not because they’re rare or flashy for the sake of it, but because everything about them feels intentional. Iridopelma is that genus for me.

Known for their soft iridescent tones, gentle coloration shifts, and elegant build, Iridopelma species have a quiet beauty that doesn’t always translate in photos, but absolutely stops you in your tracks in person. They’re arboreal tarantulas that appreciate vertical space, good airflow, and thoughtful enclosure design, which makes them as much about planning as they are about aesthetics.

What draws me to Iridopelma isn’t just the look, it’s the care philosophy they encourage. These aren’t “rush into it” spiders. They reward patience, research, and restraint. For me, they represent the kind of keeping I value most: slow, deliberate, and centered on the animal’s long-term wellbeing.

✨ Keeper Note: Dream species don’t need to be immediate purchases. Researching their natural history, enclosure needs, and long-term care before bringing one home is part of responsible keeping... and part of the joy.

🎄 Holiday Keeper Tip:

The holidays can throw routines off... travel, guests, late nights, weird schedules, but our animals still rely on consistency.

✨ Holiday Keeper Reminder:

Before travel or celebrations, double-check timers, heat sources, misting schedules, and feeder supplies. A little prep now can prevent stress (for you and your critters) later.

And it’s okay if this week is about maintenance, not upgrades. Everyone survives Christmas just fine without a new enclosure build.

💭 A Little Holiday Reflection

This time of year always reminds me how grateful I am for the animals in my care and for the community of keepers who care deeply about doing things right, even when no one’s watching.

Dream species will still be there when the time is right. Slow, intentional keeping is always worth it.

Wishing you a cozy, low-stress holiday week 🎄🕷️
See you next Wednesday.
From my zoo to yours, stay hydrated, feed your bugs, and check your basking temps.

Better late than never? (Plus: Feets the Tarantula!) 🕷️

On Wednesdays We Wear Scales  A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse. Hey! I have a confession: I completely forgot it was Wednesday yesterday. Between staring at my new ring, trying to remember what day of the week it is post-vacation, and catching up on all the "Zoo Business" I missed while in Asheville, my internal calendar is officially broken. I’m blaming Engagement Brain. But honestly? Sometimes the best schedule is the one that allows for a little chaos. If you’ve ever forgotten to mist your enclosures until 11 PM or realized you’re out of feeder insects on a Sunday night, just know, I am right there with you in the trenches of forgetfulness. Featured Creature: Feets the Curly Hair Speaking of things that are patient with my busy schedule, let’s talk about Feets, my Curly Hair Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosus). If you want an animal that won’t hold a grudge when you’re a day late on an update, get a tarantula. Feets is the ultimate low-maint...
