Issue #6 - Fashionably Late πŸπŸ’š

A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse.

The Terrarium

Hey!

Okay, I’ll be honest. This week absolutely ran me over like a loose dubia in the night. Between shifts, critters, and trying to keep my own enclosures clean-ish, I blinked… and suddenly realized it was no longer Wednesday.

But I didn’t want to skip a week, this little newsletter is one of my favorite things I do. So here we are, a cozy late-night edition of On Wednesdays We Wear Scales, sent with a warm cup of tea and a slightly feral level of determination.

Thanks for being the kind of community that doesn’t mind a fashionably late reptile update. πŸ’š

Featured Creature(s)

Featured Creature(s): Chicken & Finger

If you’re new here, yes... my cane toads are named Chicken and Finger.

Why?

Because I’m raising cane… toads.

(You’re welcome.)

These two chaotic little marshmallows have quickly become fan favorites. Chicken is the round, contemplative one. Finger is the screaming one, truly the perfect duo.

And speaking of amphibian-related chaos…

BIG NEWS: I have a partnership coming up with ReptiZoo!

We’ve been talking behind the scenes, and in the next few weeks I’ll be showcasing some of their gear, how I set it up, and how it fits into real-life keeper routines.

I cannot WAIT to share more with you (and yes, Chicken and Finger will absolutely be involved).

✨ Keeper Note: If you keep amphibians, remember that humidity ≠ hydration.

Moisture-retaining substrates like sphagnum moss actually help your animals absorb water through their skin, so always keep a damp corner available, even if the rest of the enclosure cycles drier.

Finger the cane toad sits on a wooden bridge, lit from the side, showing off his bumpy brown skin and big glossy eye. He looks alert, dramatic, and a little bit chaotic.

Keeper Tip of the Week:

Are Your Bugs Actually… Keeping Up?

If you’re feeding reptiles, amphibians, or inverts, you already know bugs aren’t just “food” — they’re a whole ecosystem you manage.

If you’ve been wanting to level up your insect colonies, troubleshoot die-offs, or understand gutloading on a deeper level, don’t forget:

πŸ” My Expert Bug Care Manual is live!

This is the big one:

• advanced colony management

• troubleshooting crashes

• nutrition & gutloading

• breeding

• scaling your setup

• all my keeper systems in one place

πŸ›’ Grab it here:

Complete Bug Care Manual

Your reptiles will thank you. Your dubias… maybe not.

✨ Thanks for sticking with me through a busy week, and for letting this newsletter show up a little late but still full of love (and questionable amphibian humor).

You all make Sweet Ave Zoo feel like a real community, and I’m so grateful you’re here.

Thanks for spending part of your Wednesday here with me.
From my zoo to yours, stay hydrated, feed your bugs, and check your basking temps.

Better late than never? (Plus: Feets the Tarantula!) πŸ•·️

On Wednesdays We Wear Scales  A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse. Hey! I have a confession: I completely forgot it was Wednesday yesterday. Between staring at my new ring, trying to remember what day of the week it is post-vacation, and catching up on all the "Zoo Business" I missed while in Asheville, my internal calendar is officially broken. I’m blaming Engagement Brain. But honestly? Sometimes the best schedule is the one that allows for a little chaos. If you’ve ever forgotten to mist your enclosures until 11 PM or realized you’re out of feeder insects on a Sunday night, just know, I am right there with you in the trenches of forgetfulness. Featured Creature: Feets the Curly Hair Speaking of things that are patient with my busy schedule, let’s talk about Feets, my Curly Hair Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosus). If you want an animal that won’t hold a grudge when you’re a day late on an update, get a tarantula. Feets is the ultimate low-maint...
