Issue #18 - Bug Care Is Animal Care

A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse.

The Terrarium

Hey!

Last week’s newsletter quietly didn’t happen… which I’m choosing to interpret as a very intentional break and not at all a scheduling mishap.

Either way, we’re back this week and talking about something that often gets overlooked in reptile keeping: taking proper care of feeder insects.

Because the animals we feed are still animals, and their care matters too.

Featured Creature

🪳 Feature: The Feeder Insects

Feeder insects are often treated like disposable supplies, but the truth is that the health of your feeders directly affects the health of the animals eating them.

When feeder insects are well cared for, they become nutritionally valuable prey instead of just empty calories.

Good feeder care means:

• Proper food and hydration (gut loading matters)

• Clean housing with ventilation

• Appropriate temperatures for the species

• Regular colony maintenance

• Respect for the animal even if it’s a feeder

Healthy feeders = healthier reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates.

✨ Keeper Note: If you wouldn’t house your reptile in poor conditions, your feeders shouldn’t live that way either. Their health becomes your animal’s nutrition.

Bug Guides for Better Feeding

A lot of you are here because you downloaded my free Bug Care Guide, which makes me incredibly happy because feeder education is something I care a lot about.

But if you didn’t know, there’s also a much more in-depth Bug Care Manual available.

The free guide covers the basics of feeder insect care, while the full manual goes deeper into things like:

• feeder species comparisons

• colony management

• gut loading strategies

• troubleshooting common problems

If feeder insects are part of your routine, having a system for them makes everything easier.

Reptile keeping isn’t just about the animals we showcase. It’s also about the ecosystems behind them, including the tiny ones that keep the whole system running.
From my zoo to yours, stay hydrated, feed your bugs, and check your basking temps.

Better late than never? (Plus: Feets the Tarantula!) 🕷️

On Wednesdays We Wear Scales  A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse. Hey! I have a confession: I completely forgot it was Wednesday yesterday. Between staring at my new ring, trying to remember what day of the week it is post-vacation, and catching up on all the "Zoo Business" I missed while in Asheville, my internal calendar is officially broken. I’m blaming Engagement Brain. But honestly? Sometimes the best schedule is the one that allows for a little chaos. If you’ve ever forgotten to mist your enclosures until 11 PM or realized you’re out of feeder insects on a Sunday night, just know, I am right there with you in the trenches of forgetfulness. Featured Creature: Feets the Curly Hair Speaking of things that are patient with my busy schedule, let’s talk about Feets, my Curly Hair Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosus). If you want an animal that won’t hold a grudge when you’re a day late on an update, get a tarantula. Feets is the ultimate low-maint...

The tarantula that started it all... 🕷️💙
