Issue #21 - A (Slightly Late) Reintroduction

A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse.

The Terrarium

Hey!

This issue is arriving fashionably late, which at this point feels less like a mistake and more like a personality trait.

But I’ve had a lot of new people join recently (hi πŸ‘‹ and welcome!!), especially after a post over on Instagram, so this felt like the perfect time to reintroduce myself and what Sweet Ave Zoo is really about.

If you’re new here, I’m Kasey!

I’m a certified veterinary technician working in emergency medicine, and Sweet Ave Zoo is my little corner of the internet where I share life with reptiles, invertebrates, and the occasional behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to care for them both at home and in a clinical setting.

This space has always been about:

• Realistic, ethical animal care

• Learning as you go (and admitting when you don’t know something)

• Making reptile keeping feel approachable, not intimidating

• And a little bit of chaos, because that’s just part of it

Whether you’ve been here since the beginning or just found me this week, I’m really glad you’re here.

Just me, talking about animals somewhere that also has belugas behind me.

🌊 A Quick Thought on Zoos & Aquariums

Since we’re on the topic of animals and where we experience them, I wanted to touch on something I care about.

I do support zoos and aquariums, especially AZA-accredited institutions, because they play a real role in conservation, education, and advancing animal care.

At the same time, I think it’s important to be thoughtful about where and how we engage, supporting places that prioritize welfare, transparency, and ethical standards.

One that’s been on my mind lately is Capron Park Zoo, a small local zoo near me that’s currently at risk of closing.

Places like that matter more than people realize. They’re often where kids (and honestly, adults too) first connect with animals in a meaningful way.

Sweet Ave Zoo has grown a lot, but at its core it’s still just me sharing what I learn, what I love, and the animals that make all of it meaningful.

If you’re new here, welcome.
If you’ve been here for a while, thank you for sticking around.

See you next Wednesday (…give or take a day) 🦎
From my zoo to yours, stay hydrated, feed your bugs, and check your basking temps.

Better late than never? (Plus: Feets the Tarantula!) πŸ•·️

On Wednesdays We Wear Scales  A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse. Hey! I have a confession: I completely forgot it was Wednesday yesterday. Between staring at my new ring, trying to remember what day of the week it is post-vacation, and catching up on all the "Zoo Business" I missed while in Asheville, my internal calendar is officially broken. I’m blaming Engagement Brain. But honestly? Sometimes the best schedule is the one that allows for a little chaos. If you’ve ever forgotten to mist your enclosures until 11 PM or realized you’re out of feeder insects on a Sunday night, just know, I am right there with you in the trenches of forgetfulness. Featured Creature: Feets the Curly Hair Speaking of things that are patient with my busy schedule, let’s talk about Feets, my Curly Hair Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosus). If you want an animal that won’t hold a grudge when you’re a day late on an update, get a tarantula. Feets is the ultimate low-maint...
