Issue #22 - Pistachio & Why Uromastyx Are So Cool

A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse.

The Terrarium

Hey!

We are officially… on time this week.

No excuses, no dramatic delays, just a calm, punctual entry into your inbox, which honestly feels suspicious but we’re going to lean into it.

This week I wanted to highlight one of the most underrated reptiles in the hobby (in my opinion): uromastyx, featuring my very own, Pistachio.

Featured Creature

🦎 Feature: Pistachio the Uromastyx

This is Pistachio.

A spiky, sun-loving, salad-eating little dinosaur who spends most of their time basking like it’s their full-time job.

Uromastyx are such a fascinating group of lizards because there isn’t just one “type”, there are multiple species, each with their own colors, sizes, and subtle differences in care.

Some are bright yellows and oranges, others are more muted and earthy. Some stay smaller, others get a bit chunkier. But across the board, they share a few core traits:

• Desert-adapted

• Primarily herbivorous

• High heat requirements (like, really high)

• Incredible baskers

• Full of personality once settled in

They’re often recommended for intermediate keepers, not because they’re difficult, but because they require precision, especially when it comes to heat and lighting.

✨ Keeper Note: Uromastyx don’t just need heat, they need intense, properly directed basking heat to thrive long-term.

What I love most about Pistachio is how intentional they are. Every movement feels purposeful. Every basking session feels like a commitment.

Uromastyx Care Guide

If uromastyx have ever been on your radar, or you just want to understand them better, I have a Uromastyx Care Guide that breaks down their care in a way that’s realistic and actually usable.

✨ What it covers:

• Proper enclosure setup

• Heat and lighting (the important part)

• Diet and feeding

• Common mistakes to avoid

• Long-term care considerations

These guys thrive when their environment is dialed in, and having a solid foundation makes all the difference.

Some animals are flashy. Some are rare. And some just quietly do their thing extremely well.

Uromastyx fall into that last category — and I think they deserve way more love than they get.

See you next Wednesday (and maybe on time again??) 🦎
From my zoo to yours, stay hydrated, feed your bugs, and check your basking temps.

Better late than never? (Plus: Feets the Tarantula!) πŸ•·️

On Wednesdays We Wear Scales  A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse. Hey! I have a confession: I completely forgot it was Wednesday yesterday. Between staring at my new ring, trying to remember what day of the week it is post-vacation, and catching up on all the "Zoo Business" I missed while in Asheville, my internal calendar is officially broken. I’m blaming Engagement Brain. But honestly? Sometimes the best schedule is the one that allows for a little chaos. If you’ve ever forgotten to mist your enclosures until 11 PM or realized you’re out of feeder insects on a Sunday night, just know, I am right there with you in the trenches of forgetfulness. Featured Creature: Feets the Curly Hair Speaking of things that are patient with my busy schedule, let’s talk about Feets, my Curly Hair Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosus). If you want an animal that won’t hold a grudge when you’re a day late on an update, get a tarantula. Feets is the ultimate low-maint...
