The Bathtub Jungle (and why we don't say "Collection") 🛁🌿

The Terrarium

Hey!

If you walked into my bathroom this morning, you’d have two options:

Assume I’ve finally lost it and am attempting to bathe in a swamp.

Recognize the sacred ritual of The Bathtub Soak.

I was looking at this photo of my plants huddled together in the tub and it hit me, people often use the word "collection" to describe what we do. But "collection" feels so... static. It sounds like something gathering dust on a shelf.

What we have is more like a living, breathing mosaic. We aren't just collecting animals; we're curated by them. We manage humidity cycles, light spectrums, and soil biomes. We’re essentially just interior designers for things that have scales and leaves.

It’s not a collection; it’s a commitment to the "grit" of life (and yes, sometimes that grit is literally in my bathtub).

While the plants are soaking and the reptiles are basking, there is a whole world happening beneath the surface. I’m talking about the feeders.

We spend so much time obsessing over the "main characters" (looking at you, Fettuccine), that we forget the supporting cast. But as a CVT, I’m legally obligated to remind you: Your reptile is only as healthy as the bug it just ate. If you're still just throwing "whatever is in the bag" into the enclosure, we need to talk.

📚 Level Up Your Keeper Game

The Master Bug Guide: Beyond the Basics

Most of you found your way to Sweet Ave Zoo through my free guide, which is a great "handshake" into the world of feeders. But if you're ready to move past the "Big Three" and really optimize your animal's nutrition, I’ve put together something much more in-depth.

In this guide, we dive deep into:

Silkworms: The "superfood" of the reptile world.

Earthworms: Why they're the underrated GOATs of calcium.

Advanced Gut-Loading: Turning your feeders into tiny, walking multivitamins.

It’s everything I’ve learned about the science of "Bug-as-Medicine" in one spot.

So, if your house currently looks like a botanical garden exploded in your service areas, or if you’re currently negotiating with a cricket that escaped behind the fridge, you’re doing it right.

This isn't a "collection" we can just set and forget. It's a revolving door of watering, gut-loading, and observing. It’s a lot of work, but seeing a healthy animal and a thriving plant makes the "bathtub tax" 100% worth it.

Go give your plants a drink and your bugs some high-quality snacks.
From my zoo to yours, stay hydrated, feed your bugs, and check your basking temps.

Better late than never? (Plus: Feets the Tarantula!) 🕷️

On Wednesdays We Wear Scales  A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse. Hey! I have a confession: I completely forgot it was Wednesday yesterday. Between staring at my new ring, trying to remember what day of the week it is post-vacation, and catching up on all the "Zoo Business" I missed while in Asheville, my internal calendar is officially broken. I’m blaming Engagement Brain. But honestly? Sometimes the best schedule is the one that allows for a little chaos. If you’ve ever forgotten to mist your enclosures until 11 PM or realized you’re out of feeder insects on a Sunday night, just know, I am right there with you in the trenches of forgetfulness. Featured Creature: Feets the Curly Hair Speaking of things that are patient with my busy schedule, let’s talk about Feets, my Curly Hair Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosus). If you want an animal that won’t hold a grudge when you’re a day late on an update, get a tarantula. Feets is the ultimate low-maint...

The tarantula that started it all... 🕷️💙
