Issue #30 - From the ER Trenches to the Podiums: The Secret Slide Decks!

A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse.

The Terrarium

Hey !

If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be taking my overnight emergency room chaos and turning it into a literal masterclass, I probably would have laughed you right out of the treatment room. But here we are! I have some absolutely massive news to share, and I am still pinching myself.

Grab your coffee, put on your favorite pair of scrubs, and let’s dive into this week’s edition.

Your favorite pink-haired, nocturnal vet tech is officially stepping out of the dark and onto the stage. I’ve been invited to be a guest speaker at the Rhode Island Vet Tech Association symposium next spring!

Being able to represent the exotic, emergency, and wildlife world in my own home state is an absolute dream come true. I’ve spent the last few weeks hyper-focusing on building out three massive, one-hour lecture decks: "Who’s Who", "The Techy Side", and "The Clinical Arsenal". We’re covering everything from the absolute basics of exotic identification to high-stakes crash cart protocols for animals that weigh less than a single can of Alani. It’s going to be wild, educational, and you know I’m bringing that signature Sweet Ave Zoo energy to the podium.

💡 Keeper Notes: When Husbandry Goes Wrong

Since I’ve got clinical slide decks on the brain, I wanted to give you guys a sneak peek into the second hour of my lecture series, which comes straight out of the file "The Techy Side". In the ER, we see a lot of true emergencies, but a heartbreaking number of them actually start right at home due to completely preventable husbandry mistakes. Here are two major clinical red flags we see when setups go wrong:

  • Nutritional Secondary Hyperparathyroidism (MBD): This is a nightmare we see constantly in reptiles. When a herp lacks proper UVB lighting or dietary calcium, their body experiences severe hypocalcemia. To keep the heart beating, the body literally strips calcium straight from its own bones. This leads to classic deformities like "rubber jaw," folding fractures, and muscle tremors.
  • Hypovitaminosis C (Scurvy) in Guinea Pigs: Did you know guinea pigs are just like us? They completely lack the enzyme needed to synthesize Vitamin C and must get it entirely from their diet. Without it, their collagen production fails, meaning blood vessels, skin, and joints lose all structural integrity. They present with painful, swollen joints, bruising, and a total reluctance to move.

🐛 Product Spotlight: The Ultimate Bug Guide!

Speaking of proper nutrition and preventing those scary husbandry deficiencies, let’s talk about everyone's favorite topic: BUGS! 🪳If you want to make sure your reptiles are getting the exact calcium-to-phosphorus ratios they need to keep their bones rock-solid, you need to diversify their plate. I am so excited to highlight my Expert Bug Guide this week! Whether you are breeding dubia roaches at home or just trying to figure out if crickets are worth the hype, this guide breaks down the nutritional profiles, gut-loading secrets, and breeding hacks you need to keep your critters thriving.

That is all for this week's sneak peek, crew! I'm headed back into the overnight ER trenches to monitor some vitals, prep some pediatric Ambu bags, and keep the zoo running.
Before you go, hit reply and tell me: What is one exotic veterinary or husbandry topic you’ve always wanted to see broken down on a presentation slide? Your idea might just make it into my final symposium decks!
From my zoo to yours, stay hydrated, feed your bugs, and check your basking temps.

Better late than never? (Plus: Feets the Tarantula!) 🕷️

On Wednesdays We Wear Scales  A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse. Hey! I have a confession: I completely forgot it was Wednesday yesterday. Between staring at my new ring, trying to remember what day of the week it is post-vacation, and catching up on all the "Zoo Business" I missed while in Asheville, my internal calendar is officially broken. I’m blaming Engagement Brain. But honestly? Sometimes the best schedule is the one that allows for a little chaos. If you’ve ever forgotten to mist your enclosures until 11 PM or realized you’re out of feeder insects on a Sunday night, just know, I am right there with you in the trenches of forgetfulness. Featured Creature: Feets the Curly Hair Speaking of things that are patient with my busy schedule, let’s talk about Feets, my Curly Hair Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosus). If you want an animal that won’t hold a grudge when you’re a day late on an update, get a tarantula. Feets is the ultimate low-maint...

The tarantula that started it all... 🕷️💙
