Issue #41 - Saying Goodbye to Azalea: The Quiet Heartbreak of Small Lifespans 🕷️💖

A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse.

The Terrarium

Hey there,

I wish I were coming into your inbox with lighter news today, but if you keep invertebrates, you know that loving these tiny creatures comes with a very specific, quiet kind of heartbreak.

Recently, we said our final goodbye to Azalea, my sweet jumping spider.

Look at that face in the photo below. With her curious little eyes and her giant personality, she converted so many people who used to be terrified of spiders into full-blown arachnid lovers. She was a tiny ambassador for her species, and the zoo room feels a little less bright without her curious jumps and web-spinning routines.

The Terrarium: The Impact of a Tiny Life 🕷️

Jumping spiders have a way of stealing your heart in a way few other invertebrates can. They observe you, they track your movements, and they display an undeniable level of intelligence and curiosity.

Because of their engaging nature, it’s easy to forget just how brief their lifespans truly are. Most jumping spiders only live around 1 to 2 years. As keepers, we know the timeline is short when we welcome them into our homes, but that doesn't make the end any easier when their little legs start to slow down and their grip begins to fade.

Azalea lived a cozy, spoiled life filled with comfortable enclosures, endless prey, and so much love. She proved that an animal doesn't need to be big, furry, or long-lived to leave a massive mark on your heart.

💡 Keeper Notes: Navigating Invertebrate Loss

Loss is an inevitable part of keeping animals, but in the exotic and invertebrate community, it often comes with a strange layer of isolation. People outside the hobby don't always understand grieving a spider, a beetle, or a scorpion.

If you are currently processing the loss of a small pet, here are a few gentle reminders:

  • Your grief is valid: Love isn't measured by the size of an animal or the length of its lifespan. Feeling a deep sense of loss for a spider or an insect is completely normal and valid.
  • Focus on the life provided: Invertebrates in the wild face endless hazards. Giving an animal a safe, predator-free, enriched environment to live out its natural life is a wonderful gift.
  • Reach out to your community: Talk to fellow keepers who understand. Having spaces like this community, where people genuinely care about these tiny lives, makes processing those quiet goodbyes a little easier.

🌿 Community Spotlight: Free Resources & Support

Out of respect for Azalea and keeping our space focused on what truly matters today, we are skipping our usual product feature this week.

If you are a new keeper working on dialing in your invertebrate parameters or feeder colonies, please remember that my Free Feeder Bug Guide is always available on the website as a free community download. Keeping our feeder animals and tiny predators thriving is the best way we can honor their care.

Thank you all for loving Azalea right along with me through every photo, video, and update. She was truly a special little soul.

Before you go today, hit reply and let me know: Who was the very first "small" pet, whether a spider, bug, lizard, or rodent, that completely stole your heart?
Rest easy, sweet Azalea.

Better late than never? (Plus: Feets the Tarantula!) 🕷️

On Wednesdays We Wear Scales  A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse. Hey! I have a confession: I completely forgot it was Wednesday yesterday. Between staring at my new ring, trying to remember what day of the week it is post-vacation, and catching up on all the "Zoo Business" I missed while in Asheville, my internal calendar is officially broken. I’m blaming Engagement Brain. But honestly? Sometimes the best schedule is the one that allows for a little chaos. If you’ve ever forgotten to mist your enclosures until 11 PM or realized you’re out of feeder insects on a Sunday night, just know, I am right there with you in the trenches of forgetfulness. Featured Creature: Feets the Curly Hair Speaking of things that are patient with my busy schedule, let’s talk about Feets, my Curly Hair Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosus). If you want an animal that won’t hold a grudge when you’re a day late on an update, get a tarantula. Feets is the ultimate low-maint...
