Issue #45 - New Chapter, Same Passion: Moving to VEG Warwick! šŸ©ŗšŸ

A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse.

Hey!

Grab your iced coffee, because we have a huge career update happening this week!

After an incredible run with the overnight ER crew at VEG Boston, I am officially making the move over to VEG Warwick!

Working overnight emergency medicine is intense, high-stakes work, but the crew you build on the night shift becomes actual family. Case in point: take a look at the photo below! That is our legendary overnight crew piling up for a group stack on shift, complete with Fettuccine casually draped across the very top as our official scaly team mascot.

While saying goodbye to my Boston team is bittersweet, I am so excited to bring my 10 years of ER tech experience to the Warwick location and serve our local exotic and domestic patients closer to home!

The Terrarium

The Art of a Smooth Transition šŸ”

Whether you are transferring to a new emergency hospital floor or moving a terrestrial invertebrate into a brand-new enclosure, smooth transitions are everything.

In veterinary medicine, when a patient transitions from home care to the ER floor, minimizing environmental stress is our number one goal. The exact same principle applies to our animals at home! When you introduce a heavy-bodied terrestrial tarantula, a scorpion, or a colony of ground-dwelling invertebrates to a new setup, the habitat needs to be dialed in before they ever step foot inside.

Having proper substrate depth to prevent fall injuries, cross-ventilation, and secure latching systems makes all the difference between an animal thriving or getting stressed out during a move.

šŸ’” Keeper Notes: Terrestrial Invert Setup Essentials

If you’re setting up a home for a terrestrial tarantula or ground-dwelling invert, here are three golden rules to keep in mind:

  • 1. Substrate Depth Over Height: Terrestrial tarantulas are heavy-bodied and not built for climbing. The distance between the top of the substrate and the enclosure lid should never exceed twice the spider's leg span to prevent dangerous falls.
  • 2. Proper Cross-Ventilation: Stagnant air is a silent killer for many invertebrates. Ensure your enclosure features side-wall ventilation to keep air moving smoothly across the substrate.
  • 3. Secure Latching: Invertebrates are shockingly strong! Magnetic or sliding locking lids are mandatory to keep your tiny escape artists safely contained.

Better late than never? (Plus: Feets the Tarantula!) šŸ•·️

On Wednesdays We Wear Scales  A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse. Hey! I have a confession: I completely forgot it was Wednesday yesterday. Between staring at my new ring, trying to remember what day of the week it is post-vacation, and catching up on all the "Zoo Business" I missed while in Asheville, my internal calendar is officially broken. I’m blaming Engagement Brain. But honestly? Sometimes the best schedule is the one that allows for a little chaos. If you’ve ever forgotten to mist your enclosures until 11 PM or realized you’re out of feeder insects on a Sunday night, just know, I am right there with you in the trenches of forgetfulness. Featured Creature: Feets the Curly Hair Speaking of things that are patient with my busy schedule, let’s talk about Feets, my Curly Hair Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosus). If you want an animal that won’t hold a grudge when you’re a day late on an update, get a tarantula. Feets is the ultimate low-maint...
