Issue #48 - Sparks of Light: Finding Small Joys in Heavy Seasons 🎣✨

A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse.

Hey,

If you take a look at the photo below, you’ll see me in a white dress, fishing rod in hand, holding up a fish with a huge smile on my face.

What you might not guess from just looking at a photo is when it was taken: right during my dad's memorial service.

Grief is a strange, non-linear experience. It sits heavy on your shoulders, but somehow, life still manages to sneak in these unexpected, beautiful moments of light. Being down by the water, stepping onto the dock, casting a line, and feeling that familiar tug on the rod was like taking a sudden, deep breath of fresh air right when I needed it most.

🎣 The Quiet Power of Small Anchor Points

When you are navigating a loss or going through a heavy, exhausting season, expecting yourself to feel "100% back to normal" is impossible. But finding small anchor points; a quiet moment in the woods, the tug on a fishing line, or just watching a pet move around their enclosure, can hold you up.

For me, catching that fish was pure connection. It wasn't about the size of the catch or the technique; it was about honoring the memory of my dad by doing the very thing he loved and taught me to do. It was proof that joy and sorrow can exist in the exact same room, at the exact same time.

Sometimes the best thing we can do for ourselves during tough times isn't trying to fix everything or force a smile, but simply allowing ourselves to receive those small, quiet gifts of happiness when they show up.

💬 Keeping It Simple

Just like last week, there are no product spotlights, care guides, or sales links in this issue. We’ll get back to our usual creature features and clinical tips when the time feels right. But today, I just wanted to share this piece of light with all of you.

Thank you for continuing to hold space for me, for reading these personal notes, and for being the most supportive community a keeper could ask for.

If you are carrying a heavy heart right now or just trying to navigate a tough week, I hope you find a small moment today that brings a real smile to your face.

Before I log off, hit reply and let me know: What is one small, simple activity that always grounds you and brings you peace when life feels heavy?
Sending you all the love,
💚 Kasey

Better late than never? (Plus: Feets the Tarantula!) 🕷️

On Wednesdays We Wear Scales  A midweek check-in from your favorite pink-haired reptile nurse. Hey! I have a confession: I completely forgot it was Wednesday yesterday. Between staring at my new ring, trying to remember what day of the week it is post-vacation, and catching up on all the "Zoo Business" I missed while in Asheville, my internal calendar is officially broken. I’m blaming Engagement Brain. But honestly? Sometimes the best schedule is the one that allows for a little chaos. If you’ve ever forgotten to mist your enclosures until 11 PM or realized you’re out of feeder insects on a Sunday night, just know, I am right there with you in the trenches of forgetfulness. Featured Creature: Feets the Curly Hair Speaking of things that are patient with my busy schedule, let’s talk about Feets, my Curly Hair Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosus). If you want an animal that won’t hold a grudge when you’re a day late on an update, get a tarantula. Feets is the ultimate low-maint...

The tarantula that started it all... 🕷️💙
